Paradise West was in the West family for over 50 years. This Alaskan wilderness log cabin was hand-built in 1983 by Haines resident and artisan John Carlson, for Chuck West. Chuck is well known throughout Alaska as the father of Alaska tourism, and was widely referred to as “Mr. Alaska”. This was Chuck’s treasured spot, his favored personal hideaway. No one knew Alaska like Chuck West, and of the whole big state, this was his special spot. The view of Rainbow Glacier from our cabin is inspiring and breathtaking. Your visit here will not only afford you spectacular views from the spacious waterfront cabin and broad deck, but will also put you in touch with a slice of Alaska history. Local art and carefully chosen mementos highlight this unique home in this idyllic spot.
The new owners of Paradise West are improving the property by renovating the kitchen, adding a romantic yurt accommodation and honoring the original vision of Chuck West. Chuck West originally envisioned a very rustic place, with no modern conveniences. Over time, it has been modernized, but it is still a wilderness retreat, and the modern conveniences have their limitations. We hope you will embrace those limitations as part of the experience of the true Alaska wilderness and the unique nature of this special place. Unplug, watch the bald eagles soar by. If you wander the property, you may spot the bald eagle nest far up in a towering spruce tree.
